Nearly every corner of the Earth has microplastic pollution. These bits of plastic give pathogens a refuge in which to thrive. Viruses can hitch a ride on plastic to help them float in the water freely. When plastic breaks down, the protection gained by these viruses increases. This makes infections more difficult to fight off or eradicate.
