Behind the Enigma of Pufferfish

Pufferfish are odd-looking fish known for being a Japanese delicacy and its strange biological ability of inflating itself at the earliest signs of a threat or when stressed.

Gareth Fraser, an evolutionary biologist from the University of Florida has studied the unusual fish in greater detail, documenting their unique mating habits along seacoasts.

It is reported that one subspecies of the fish surfaces itself close to the beach, where the eggs and sperm of the animals are mingled before they return to the depths of the sea.

Fraser has also been interested in the physical anomalies of the pufferfish, such as the beak-like teeth that has a strangely vertebrate characteristic to it, which may shed insight on distant ancestries that link them to land species.
