Prehistoric Crocs May Have Been Herbivorous
| |Crocodiles are notorious for being ferocious predators. However, new research suggests that ancestral species from the Mesozoic era may have preferred a steady diet of plants.
The study was based of the analysis of teeth contained in fossil samples of the species. The teeth were examined under an advanced scanning program, which reaped breakthrough findings. The samples were compared to other ancestors of crocodiles as well as modern species.
The texture of the teeth suggested a predominantly plant-based diet. These extinct crocs were believed to have lived in a different environment compared to modern crocodiles and were dependent on plants for survival due to the nature of their ecosystem.
