NEW BACTERIA IS THE NEW HOPE FOR FIGHTING SUPERBUGS
Scientists, who are analyzing Ireland soil, have discovered a formerly unknown bacterial strain. The soil has long been regarded as medicinal. The said potency of the soil is because of the bacteria that is proven effective in fighting four of the known top 6 super pathogens resistant to antibiotics. These resistant bacteria include MRSA.
Experts say that these antibiotic-resistant bacteria are great threats to global development, holistic health, and food security. The newly discovered strain, Streptomyces sp. myrophorea, resembles fungi and produces a unique scent similar to wintergreen oil. It can target antibiotic-resistant bacteria including MRSA. This strain can also fight both gram positive and gram negative bacteria (usually resistant to antibiotics).
The soil the scientists studied was from Fermanagh, Northern Island, called the Boho Highlands. Its soil is said to have healing powers. This just goes to show that traditional medicines can pave the way for the development of new antibiotics.
