Mozambique and Zimbabwe have ponds where the endemic African turquoise killifish lives. During the dry season, the fish embryos enter an extreme state of suspended animation. This stage is also known as an 8-month diapause. Scientists discovered that this fish species has a gene expression for extreme suspended animation.
