Bacteria Fighting Virus Discovered in 1915
| |
One hundred years ago, researchers stumbled upon a situation where viruses would “eat” bacteria, or so they thought. These Bacteriophages were really infecting the bacteria, which in turn destroyed it completely. It was an interesting concept even then but there wasn’t sufficient technology or need to explore this possibility to its fullest.
Today, we have better technology and a slew of antibiotic resistant bacterial infections and scientists are hoping this old discovery could breathe new life into treatment options. It has already been used to save lives in several situations, though it is not yet USDA approved. The organization approved limited use of the treatment in life threatening situations only.
