Earthquake Swarm in Idaho
| |About thirty years ago Idaho had a 6.0 earthquake. It’s possible that it may be headed for another one if the quake swarm is anything to go by. Idaho has been seeing a massive swarm of small quakes that are, so far, going unnoticed. These quakes are hitting at a rate of 5-10 a day nearly every day this week.
Scientists aren’t sure if they are going to be the harbinger of something bigger or if they are simply a swarm of small quakes leading to nothing.
BOISE — More than 40 small earthquakes have been recorded in east-central Idaho this week in what experts say is another earthquake swarm in the region.
Officials in the Challis area on Friday reported no damage from the micro-quakes that started Tuesday and have mostly gone unnoticed or unreported in an area experienced with more vigorous shaking.
But the temblors ranging up to 2.9 magnitude have perked up scientists trying to understand the fault system in the area where a 5.0 magnitude quake struck in January.
